Sea Sponges; A Sustainable Solution

Sea Sponges

You’ve probably heard the word sea sponge before, but many of us are still a bit confused about the specifics of these sponges. We’ve done some digging and are ready to lay out the facts about these natural and sustainable sponges!

What is a Sea Sponge?

Sea sponges are simple tissue-less organisms that live and grow in the sea (it’s all in the name). Often found in coral reefs, these sponges play a vital role in aquatic ecosystems by filtering water, collecting bacteria, processing nitrous, carbon and phosphorus. Sea sponges naturally protect the reefs around them from potentially detrimental fluctuations in temperature, nutrients and even light. If that’s not enough to convince you how cool these sponges are, broken off pieces of sponge attach themselves to floating debris and begin growing!

Why you should switch to a sea sponge.

Sea sponges boast many advantages over artificial sponges. Most importantly, sea sponges are 100% natural, making them completely eco-friendly and biodegradable!  On top of being natural and biodegradable, sea sponges are actually a sustainable resource! Sponges are harvested in a way that allows them to regrow even after they have been harvested. Sponge divers are trained to cut the sponge free while leaving the base. (Don’t worry, trimming the sea sponge does not harm the organism. It’s similar to cutting your hair!) With the base of the sponge well intact, the sea sponge will regenerate itself over a period of 3 to 5 years. This makes sea sponges a smart eco-friendly switch for those of us looking to incorporate more natural and sustainable products into our daily lives.

How to take care of a Sea Sponge

Sea sponges, not unlike loofahs require a little bit of care to prevent any unwanted bacteria. But don’t worry, it’s super simple!

Here is how to easily take care of your sea sponge:

  1. Rinse your sponge in cold water before ringing out the excess moisture.
  2. Fill a bowl with a mixture of vinegar and warm water. (The quantity will depend on the size of your sponge, but we recommend a ratio of 1 part vinegar to 3 parts warm water.)
  3. Fully submerge your sponge in the mixture and let soak for 2 hours.
  4. Ring out the excess moisture and set out to dry naturally.
  5. Repeat the process once every 2 weeks.

Tip: Avoid overly hot or boiling water as it will affect the structure and texture of the sponge.
